Martin Scorsese’s Journey Through American Movies (1995)

Martin Scorsese is a walking film recommendation machine in the film industry and when I spent a long time watching this documentary, I initially found it boring, but I soon changed my mind. After watching the film I was struck by the fact that many people just see cinema as a means of personal expression, whereas Scorsese sees cinema as a religion, he is a devout disciple and that is why he has made so many great works and is still so humble. He is also so knowledgeable and happy to pour his heart out, he seems to only want to dedicate himself to cinema. In my opinion, he was really generous.I want to download all the films he mentioned that I haven't seen, and I want to rush to watch all the ones I have seen. I always feel that when someone says I'll love movies for the rest of my life that's a big statement... who knows what they'll like in the future when life is so long? But when I hear Martin Scorsese talking about films, it feels like it's entirely possible and there's everything to look forward to in the future.

I wouldn't have been tired if Scorsese had gone on for three or even thirty hours, telling the story of the rise, the glory and the fall of the big film studios ,using very few familiar masterpieces to make his point, but using material that is accurate while at the same time popularising these potentially overlooked masterpieces. Minnelli, Vidor, Ford and so on, Scorsese fully understands the emotional appeal of each piece he has chosen and edits it to the most delicious and old-fashioned level, leaving the end of the film with a new generation of filmmakers, including himself, in the dust, which is truly evocative.
