Metropolis 1927
A modified Marseillaise echoes in the melody of the workers' riots, the horror and blindness of the mass power movement, the labour dispute in German Expressionism. I thought it was a very gorgeous and decadent epic sonata, dreamy and evocative.
The seven deadly sins of human nature have destroyed the city of the dead by their own hand, in a majestic and powerful film that depicts class confrontation and extinction in a superbly imagined sci-fi vision of the future with unparalleled  foresight. Is Maria the Machine the villain? Is she a demon? Is it a viper from the Garden of Eden?
Although I still found it as entertaining as stop-motion animation due to the frame limit, the performances were very impressive and there were also very stylish costume elements that wouldn't be out of place in modern times. The personal charisma of the crowd leader is sadly mirrored against the crowd who go with the flow and don't know right from wrong. The development of technology is positively correlated with the loss of humanity, and the brain and hand will always need to be bridged and regulated by the heart.
