HI!HAMLET
year 1 term 2
spring term
10th-17th January:
It's the start of a new term, a happy break and a fresh start! I've finished the costume 101 and am ready to return it to the library. With the new brief coming up, I found it a little difficult to find enough historical clothing as there is less historical material left, but I managed to find enough pictures with references. The potato printing was interesting, I had played with similar rubber stamp printing so it was a novelty. The artwork was equally exciting and I couldn't help but think about what I wanted to do. This week's viewing task is La Belle et le Bette, the costumes and designs are beautiful. I loved the French version, which was equally charming. The breeches project is a new beginning, expect all to go well!
17th-23rd January:
The brainstorming for the artwork is complete and I have written out a lot of key words trying to express a relative idea. Thesis research in progress. Interesting design project this week too! I had a lot of inspiration for designing two career-related superheroes and ended up with two ordinary and common characters living alone in a world of light and darkness but sharing the same mood. Using different painting materials was interesting to me as I learnt how to use different materials before painting. However, my use of acrylics was not good and I painted ugly. The pattern of the breeches is also being made, I find it difficult to measure and tailor them, I think it's still a long way to go to become a tailor
24th-30th January:
My wix website finally has enough project content to work with this semester, so I'm feeling good about that. Enough research has been collected for the dissertation so I have started writing my dissertation plan. I am going to start with the current state and future of fiction adaptations in the film and television industry in China. Our assignment this week was to make a piece of discarded jewellery from recycled materials and I immediately decided that I wanted to make a flower pin, so I collected plastic pieces and wire to make the petals. The end result I thought was beautiful, but in reality the plastic pieces could not be considered recycled materials and I should have read the brief properly. I made the prototype for the breeches.
31st January-6th February:
The dyeing work led to some tension in the making of the breeches and I think I should have thought more about the making of the work before I did it, otherwise I always got it wrong. I can't always be too nervous. Last term I was expecting us to have a Shakespeare design project, and I never thought it would actually come true! It's still my favourite, A Midsummer Night's Dream. We created the wrong designs for two characters, which confused me slightly as I couldn't think of a suitable design, but I managed to come up with two designs that I thought were wrong.
7th-13th February:
We've got a new design substitute instructor and I love her! In fact she was the one who taught us in my previous co-op class. Our assignment this week was to reference materials to give ourselves a collage of self-portraits with pictures, which I thought was fun too. The dissertation project is all done and I've started writing a draft... adapting a novel is so much fun!
14th-20th February:
The breeches are making great progress, but I always have bad stitches, I tend to sew them straight and there are always a lot of threads that don't look delicate. I think I should work more on my hand sewing. I submitted my dissertation project and the first draft is in progress. I also have my artwork ideas and sketches, but they are a bit difficult to realise and to make, so I am thinking about switching to another way of expressing myself and completing the artwork in a way that I am more able to do, while making good use of the skills I learnt last term.
21st-27th February:
We had a design workshop on Monday and I thought it was interesting that collage makes it easier to get design inspiration and is a necessary design skill. The dissertation guidance was equally interesting and we managed to finish it! I feel confident about my dissertation. The breeches have been successfully submitted and I think I still need to work more on the sewing side of things.
28th February-6th March:
We started making dresses for Victorian music hall era performers, the model was a friend of mine, the design was drafted by another friend and all three of us took measurements for each other. Research task in progress. For the design project we researched and made costumes for the talking heads' assigned roles. I thought this might also be a good way of matching outfits when I'm not inspired to design. I took note of the price and address of each item of clothing.
7th-13th March:
This week we have a two-week design draft to make masks and hats, and the role I've been assigned happens to be the one I researched when making my breeches, which saves me a lot of time on research because I have a ready-made design idea to use and I can match it to my breeches as an outfit, which I think is great! I made up the shape of the head in clay and took measurements. We started making the skirt and were a bit pressed for time for this project as we were due to go on holiday soon.
14th-20th March:
We had feedback this week and my breeches didn't do very well, Lottie told me to ask more questions and Helen suggested I pay a bit more attention to body proportions in my designs, I think I need to work on them more. My mask and hat are done! I thought the big tongue on the mask I made was interesting.
21st-27th March:
I finally finished the dress and was very nervous, there were many imperfections and I think I should be more aware of my timing for my next project. The paper costume course was so much fun, I loved the spontaneity of the designs and meeting lots of students. I was really excited to work with everyone on the project and I think I was more outspoken than I was on the last Christmas box project.
28th March-3rd April:
It's the end of spring term! I'm going to get my vaccination over the holidays as my previous one is due to expire. I need a holiday now!
